Although the exterior of the Volvo S40 is a dynamic evolution of previous designs, the car's interior is nothing short of a revolution. The focus of attention in the cabin is a an ultra-thin central stack that appears to be free-floating in space. It's reflects Volvo's crisp, clean Scandinavian design heritage and the company's commitment to premium quality, even in its smallest model.
However, form in car design is worthless without function, and the Volvo S40 is nothing if not practical. There's generous space for five adults in its interior, while despite its compact overall dimensions, the Volvo S40 has a 404-litre boot capacity. This can be increased by folding flat the rear seatbacks, while the front passenger seat back also folds flat for loading long items.
The development of the central stack, meanwhile, lays the car's minor controls close at hand for the driver, while there's useful storage space behind the stack. The driving position is multi-adjustable and the steering wheel adjusts for both reach and rake, thus retaining the excellent ergonomics that Volvo is renowned for in the automotive industry.
Despite the S40 being the most compact Volvo on sale today, its occupants are asked to make no compromises when it comes to living with the car.
