The Volvo S40 is as enjoyable to drive as it is safe. Uniquely in this class, it offers a choice of two five-cylinder transversely mounted petrol engines, the most potent of which, the mighty T5, boasts some 220bhp. The 2.4i has 170bhp. These five-cylinder units are joined by refined 1.6 (100bhp) and 1.8-litre (125bhp) four-cylinder petrol units, plus two quiet and economical turbodiesels, a 1.6D (109bhp) and the powerful 2.0D (136bhp).


On the road, the Volvo S40 obeys its driver's commands immediately and without fuss. Its exceptional torsional rigidity helps its suspension perform its job properly, combining an engaging, dynamic driving experience with a high level of active safety. A wide track and long wheelbase not only aid interior space, they also improves the car's balance, enabling it to cope with high cornering forces, while providing clear and consistent feedback to the driver.

In addition to the mechanical set-up, all Volvo S40s benefit from a Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) system, which monitors the car's on-road behaviour and, if it starts to skid, DSTC automatically brakes individual wheels to help the driver retain control.
