Volvo is at the forefront of the motor industry for environmental care. In fact, so proud is Volvo of its advances in this area, the Volvo S40, like all Volvos, is supplied with an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) that gives an overview of the car's environmental impact throughout its life. Volvo was the first manufacturer to introduce such a system.
The S40 has been designed in accordance with Volvo's ‘Clean Inside and Out' programme, which focuses on health, use of resources and the consequences of production, use and disposal of the car.
Volvo's Ghent factory in Belgium, where the Volvo S40 is manufactured, is one of the most advanced production facilities in the world. Over 340 million Euros have been invested in the plant and both the manufacturing process and materials used have been chosen to minimise the environmental impact of production.
Some eighty-five percent of the Volvo S40 by weight can be recycled, while the car's on-board systems have been optimised for efficiency, right down to a system that can recover evaporated fuel vapour. The radiators on the five-cylinder engines include the PremAir® system, an industry first catalytic coating that converts up to 60 percent of ground-level ozone into oxygen, reducing pollutants.
Furthermore, Volvo S40 occupants are protected from allergens and irritants by the car's own interior. Developed to comply with Öko-Tex standards, all textures inside the cabin are hypoallergenic and free from hazardous substances.
