Volvo unveiled the sporty C30 Design Concept at Detroit's North American International Auto Show in January. It's a concept that gives a strong indication towards the design of the exciting new C30 production model, which Volvo will launch in September.
Inspired by the classic P1800ES and the recent Volvo SCC (Safety Concept Car), the C30 Concept is a two-door coupe with four individual seats and a glass tailgate, and is powered by a 260bhp, 2.4-litre, five-cylinder turbocharged engine, with 350Nm of torque.
The production C30, which the concept's design previews, will be a stylish, compact model that allows Volvo to enter an entirely new market segment for the company, rivalling cars like the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Alfa Romeo 147.
Although Volvo has a busy schedule of new model launches in 2006, the C30 is its most significant new car. It doesn't replace an existing model and is aimed at a new set of customers for Volvo: those who don't have children and want a stylish compact car that's good to drive.
"We know there are a large number of younger people who are attracted by the Volvo brand, but cannot find a compact model in our range that exactly matches their taste and needs," says Volvo Car Corporation's new President and CEO, Frederik Arp. "The Volvo C30 Design Concept has been developed precisely for this potentially important group of new customers."
The C30 Design Concept will be displayed at a number of other motor shows this year before the production C30 is given its world debut at the Paris Motor Show in September.
