Safety isn't just an important issue for Volvo: it's everything. The V50 Sportswagon is no exception. Its patented front-section is intelligently divided into separate zones to disperse energy and deliver the same occupant safety as the brand's larger models, while of course the V50 also comes equipped with Volvo's famous WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System) and SIPS (Side Impact Protection System).

Inside, the ignition key is located on the dashboard rather than on the steering column, for better knee protection. Cyclists and pedestrians have also been considered: the Volvo V50 has an energy absorbing structure ahead of the front bumper and there's a generous 70mm of space between the engine and the deformable bonnet.
