Here's the third set of 25 tips to help save you from problems when looking for your perfect motor. New sets of tips will be added monthly so keep checking back here!

Get dents removed and scratches filled
Dents and scratches detract from the basic solidity of a car and should be removed to get the best possible price. A dent can be surprisingly easy thing to remove. Companies like Dent Wizard practise something called paintless dent removal, which involves lightly pushing behind the damaged panel. Scratches are removed in a longer process that involves spraying and lacquering the whole panel, but companies offering either service will travel to you.

Get a specialist to sell your car
Having someone else sell your car is time-minimising and potentially cash-maximising. This system works best with exotica sold by a dealer specialising in that particular car. That way the salesman is both knowledgeable and trained in getting you the best price. In return for a percentage of the sale, they'll prepare and advertise it, attracting more of the right customers than a private sale might achieve. Some dealers only sell private cars, eg Portway Motor Centre near Birmingham.

Sell at the right time of year
In general, it's best to sell privately in spring, whether it's a convertible or not. The March plate-change sparks a flurry of activity that has a knock-on throughout the used market. After the September upheaval the demand drops off as people prepare for the Christmas spendfest. The weather is another important factor. The lack of interest through a rainy or cold spell could be misinterpreted and cause you to drop the price. Wait until the forecast promises warmth and dryness.

Don't give cause for suspicion
Car buyers are a suspicious bunch and any hint of deviousness can scare them away. The car should be in your name and if it's not, make sure the person stated on the V5 is at hand. Sell the car from the address on the V5 - anywhere else looks dodgy. Flash old receipts in front of the buyer, and shown them past MoTs to establish the mileage is genuine. Finally, don't spout any sub-Arfur Daley rubbish about careful owners.
