100 Greatest Cars
Nominees
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
Ferrari F40 - 1988   The F40 was all performance, zero frills (indeed, it had just strings for door-pulls to save weight). But it offered the buyer the closest thing to a Formula One driving experience as one could get in 1987.
Ferrari Enzo - current   Like the F40 in the '80s, the 2002 Enzo has brought Formula One racing to a tiny cluster of fabulously wealthy customers. Joined just a handful roadcars able to shatter the 200mph barrier.
Ferrari Dino - 1969   The Dino's sweet but sharky looks defined Ferrari's mid-engined cars' style for the '70s and early '80s. It was also a sensational car to drive.
Ferrari F430 - current   Motoring writers have officially run out of superlatives to describe this newest Ferrari. 'Very probably the best road car Ferrari has ever built,' according to Autocar.
Fiat 500 - 1957   The 500's brief was simple. FIAT bosses wanted a practical and affordable-for-the-masses four-seat car. The resulting machine became the Italians' 2CV, and a credible runabout even today.
Fiat X1/9 - 1972   Affordable little targa-top offered mid-engine thrills and the kind of good looks usually reserved for cars costing five times as much. A real hoot to drive, too.
Fiat X1/9 - 1972   Fiat doing what it does best - basically zigging when the rest of the world zags. The Multipla MPV pioneered the most distinctive face on the market, along with three-across seating and room for six and all their luggage.
Ford Escort (Mk I/II) - 1968   Ford's massive advance over its antiquated Anglia, the Escort blew the competition away and managed to become a rally star while it was at it.
Ford Focus - current   An immediate success when it launched in 1997, the Focus revived a stale hatchback segment with fabulous driving manners and sharp looks. It's arguably the best small-family car ever made.
Ford GT40 - 1964   The GT that beat Ferrari at Le Mans (several times) was also the most beautiful road-going Ford ever conceived. Its magnificent V8 powerhouse didn't hurt, either.
Ford Model T - 1915   The Model T put the world on wheels, thanks to Henry Ford's genius in creating a moving production line. This car, more than any other, changed the way our mobile society developed.
Ford Mustang Mk1 - 1964   The terrifically affordable Mustang brought a degree of individuality and muscle-car style to the blue collar masses that they previously could only dream about.
Ford Mondeo - 1993   The original Mondeo replaced the evergreen Sierra, and proved that Ford could make a car to take on the world. Best-handling Ford saloon car of all time.
