WHAT TO PAY
You can buy quite a serviceable 350 or 450 for £1000 and even the best won't make much more than £5000. Scruffy 6.9's are tempting at as little as £2500 but the added complexity of this car means it's cheaper in the long run to spend maybe £7000 on a really good car and budget on £10,000 for one of the best. A bargain, really.
WHERE TO FIND THEM
The classified section of the Mercedes-Benz club is always a good place to find cars (tel 07071 818868 to join) and also Mercedes Enthusiast Magazine, which is available in Newsagents.
Specialist classic Mercedes dealers like Silver Arrows (0208 789 8525) and Derek Wells (01449 774222) often have S-Class models in stock.
Though the 6.9 version is the rarest it has a much higher survival rate than other models because it was seen as being 'collectable' almost from the moment it was discontinued. On the other hand they do tend to be driven harder than the more pedestrian variants and there's more potential for finding a nicely preserved 350SE owned by the proverbial 'little old man'.
