Forget about David Bowie, T-Rex and Aerosmith, make-up for men is less about camping it up and more about hiding those spots and blemishes that make you look, well, a bit rough.
More and more men are catching on to the idea that a bit of concealer or tinted moisturiser can make you look brighter, sparkier and more attractive. Make-up artist Lauren Dunn says: fellas, what are you waiting for?
OK, so it's not make-up, but moisturising every day is the first step to looking gorgeous. A non-greasy product like Kiehls Ultra Facial SPF 15 is a good option and L'Oreal, Nivea and Boots No7 all have good, well-priced ranges. If you have oily skin, go for an oil-free product and try a pore-minimiser if you have open pores, such as Clinique Pore Minimizer T-Zone Shine Control. Remember to match your moisturiser to skin type.
If you want to even out your skin tone, try a tinted moisturiser. Don't go for anything too dark or too light - you want it to be the same shade as your skin. There are loads of choices on the high street but I recommend the Body Shop Vitamin E Tinted Moisturiser. Using an under-eye concealer will instantly brighten up your eye area so if you want to hide those dark circles, try using Clinique Airbrush Concealer or Mememe Flawless Concealer. They're easy to use - just dot a few dabs to the darkest part of your under-eye area and blend with your finger.
If you want to add a bit of colour and warmth to your face you can use a bronzing gel. A little goes a very long way so you only need to use a tiny amount. Using your fingertips, apply to your forehead, cheekbones, nose and chin. Alternatively you can use a bronzing powder, but make sure you go for a matte one (one that is not too shiny or shimmery). Benefit Hoola and Clinique Face Bronzing Gel Tint are good options.
If your eyebrows need some attention, you could have them threaded or plucked by a beautician. You can also neaten any stray hairs with scissors and use a clear mascara or brow gel to keep them in place. Try Clarins Double Fix Mascara.
If you're follically challenged and you get a bit shiny on top or on your T-zone (the area of your face that often gets the oiliest - around your nose, forehead and chin), you can use a mattifying gel to minimise shine. This is a clear invisible gel that you can find in the Body Shop, or Urban Decay does a version called De-Slick in a Tube. For more advice on managing your T-zone, read our guide to combination skin.
