When it comes to getting a little extra flutter, false eyelashes and mascara are no longer the only options. The new wave of enhancements is all about eyelash extensions.
Eyelash extensions are applied in salons by specially trained therapists. Individual synthetic lashes are carefully bonded to your existing lashes.
In most salons you can either get a full set, taking about an hour and a half to apply - a false lash is applied to each of your existing lashes, around 80 to 100 of them. Alternatively you can get a half-set for a more natural look.
When you arrive at the salon, the therapist will talk to you about what you want - how long the lashes should be, how thick, and even what kind of curl. During application the eyes will be protected and closed. You shouldn't feel any pain or discomfort.
When someone is performing a procedure near your eyes, you must be 100% certain that they know what they're doing. The industry isn't regulated, so it's sensible to use a therapist who is a member of The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC).
Charlie Zygmunt of BABTAC explains, "This means they are qualified to perform the treatment and are insured, so you're covered in the event of something going wrong. Look out for the purple BABTAC sticker in the window. A therapist should insist on a patch test 24 hours before to check you're not allergic to the glue."
Around eight to 12 weeks if you look after them. The extensions will drop off as your eyelashes naturally shed, so you'll lose about 12-15 lashes every two to three weeks. Beauty therapists recommend returning for touch-ups, for which they will charge you a small fee based on how long it takes them to replace what you've lost.
For the first 24 hours after getting lash extensions, the adhesive is still setting - so don't touch them or get them wet. After that you shouldn't need mascara, but if you do use any products on or near your lashes, they must be oil-free.
On average, eyelash extensions cost £80-£120 for a full set, or about £65 for a half-set.
