In the 14th and 15th centuries, England was prosperous: a growing population and rising wealth are reflected in the development of many of our towns, cathedrals and cities. But it was also, at various times in the late Middle Ages, a country of war, famine and social unrest.
Time Team has excavated numerous sites to uncover both winners and losers in the battle for survival in medieval England. This programme, with the help of Dr Dawn Hadley of Sheffield University, revisited the best of these sites, which all reveal something of the age. Digs covered include Much Wenlock, Shropshire, which featured in the first Time Team series back in 1994, plus:
Aston Ayre, Shropshire, where a farmhouse converted from a medieval gatehouse is the starting point for an excavation of a jumble of remains from what used to be a large manor house.
Coventry, where Time Team went in search of the city's 'lost' cathedral.
Canterbury, the location of the Time Team Live 2000, where the Team investigated the site of a medieval tile-making factory and Britain's first Franciscan priory.
Plympton, in Devon, where the Team investigated various sites in this well-preserved medieval town.
